In October 2023, Mawas, one of Mindy’s daughters, gave birth to Mario. Mawas lost her 1-year-old infant (Marsha) about a year earlier, so we were all very excited to meet Mario after she spent a few months previously in parties with several males. We waited 9 months for the birth of Mario in October!

Soon after Mawas gave birth, her older sister Milo, who was a new infant when we started at Tuanan in 2003 (20 years ago), gave birth to her second offspring, who the team named Misha. Below is a picture of Misha with her mom Milo taken by Isman, one of our Field Staff Members.

The Tuanan field team is so excited to usher in the New Year 2024 with these two new additions to the Tuanan orangutan family tree! Orangutans only give birth every 8-9 years so having two births from sisters within a month of each other is so exciting. We hope to work together with our Universitas colleagues to figure out who is the father of both of these two new babies. It is an exciting time for all! Mawas, Milo, and Mindy all had a family get together a few days after the birth of Misha -very exciting.

It is only with the amazing support of our donors that we can collect these long-term data at Tuanan. Thank you for all of your support! Stay tuned for more news from the forest in 2024!! We can’t wait for the play fest to begin among these cousins! ❤️
