The Tuanan Orangutan Research Program is run through a collaborative MOU between the University of Zürich, Universitas Nasional Jakarta (UNAS), Rutgers University, and the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF).
The Tuanan Orangutan Research Station was established in the Mawas Conservation Area area in 2003 to promote the conservation of valuable peatland habitat and the orangutans that reside there. Our goal is to: 1) build a research partnership and activities related to orangutan conservation and research; 2) carry out research on orangutans in the Mawas Reserve and 3) promote the training of undergraduate and graduate students in biological and conservation sciences. CORE Borneo assists with raising funds for the research programs at Tuanan.
Several collaborative projects are ongoing in partnership with faculty from the Primate Research Centre (PSSP; for genetics), the Veterinary Department of the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB; for endocrinology), Research Center for Biology at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Cibinong-Bogor, Indonesia, (LIPI; for nutrition), and The University of Palangkaraya (UNPAR; peat soil nutrition), as well as many studies published together with primatologists and ecologists from numerous institutions. We often collaborate with colleagues at other orangutan research sites throughout Indonesia for detailed comparisons that provide new insights into the variation among orangutan populations. All research projects are approved by the Scientific Advisory Board of the BOS Foundation.
The Tuanan Orangutan Research Program hopes to contribute to the education of the next generation of researchers and leaders in conservation by providing students with the opportunity to receive training and conduct independent studies as part of an international team of researchers. To date, more than 60 theses for university degrees have been completed based on student projects and additional data collected at Tuanan.
