We are so excited to announce the birth of a new member of the Tuanan Orangutan population! Juni gave birth to her infant this month – we are still waiting for the name and will spread the news soon! Orangutan mothers only give birth every 8-9 years, and thus they have the slowest life-history of any primate, including ourselves! We have been following Juni since we started studying orangutans at Tuanan in 2003 when she was still spending time with her mother Jinak. She gave birth to Jip (a male) in 2006 and then to Jane in 2013, and now to her new baby in 2019. This means that Juni is reproducing at a rate faster than some of the other mother orangutans in this population. Studying orangutan life-history is a slow process and this is why long-term research programs like #Tuanan are so important to understand the biology of this amazing species!
